Job Description

The F3 Local Bilingual Outreach Community Educator (Community Education Specialist 1) plays a vital role in supporting small-scale farmers and food businesses through outreach, extension education, technical assistance, and applied research activities. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Director of Local Farm and Food Innovation and as part of the F3 Local team, the Community Educator will focus on engaging the Spanish-speaking community to enhance access to resources, tools, and support.

In this role, the Community Educator will assist with conducting outreach with small-scale farmers and food business owners, focusing on Spanish-speaking communities in Fresno, Madera, Merced, Kings, and Tulare Counties. They will support and deliver bilingual educational materials, presentations, and workshops tailored to the needs of small-scale food and farming businesses. The Community Educator will aid in providing technical assistance and extension support to farmers and micro-enterprises, including guidance on appropriately scaled tools, equipment, and technology.

The position also involves supporting program planning, scheduling, and evaluation, ensuring alignment with project goals. They will prepare standardized communications, including bilingual website content, social media platforms, and newsletters, to effectively reach and engage target audiences. Additionally, the Community Educator will assist with building and maintaining relationships with nonprofit partners, community organizations, and stakeholders serving Spanish-speaking populations.

This position is a contract appointment that is 50% variable through 9/30/2026 with the possibility of extension if funding permits.

Pay Scale: $19.88/hour to $26.15/hour.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the Regional Director, participate in and support the development and delivering of bilingual educational materials to assist small-scale farms and micro enterprises. This includes print, digital, video, radio, and social media materials, extension presentations, web resources, templates, and other tools to assist small- scale farmers in complying with regulations, accessing markets and assistance programs, and crop production.

Support F3 Local team in providing bilingual technical assistance and extension support to farmers. Participate in farm visits and provide Spanish language support. Provide general bilingual support for the F3 Local team.

Work with the F3 Local team to organize, promote, and conduct extension workshops on topics such as Appropriately Scaled Tools and Technology, Food Safety and Compliance and Permits and Licensing for Small-Scale Food Businesses.

Assist the F3 Local team in providing food businesses and food entrepreneurs with technical assistance for business support and access to technology. Assist with applications for permits, licenses and other documents.

10%

Assist with bilingual outreach to socially disadvantaged farmers including developing farmer contacts, maintaining contact lists, and conducting outreach through radio, social media, newsletters, farm visits, and networking.

Participate with the F3 Local team in meetings with nonprofit partner organizations, regulatory agencies, and policy makers to provide information on the needs and challenges of small- scale farms and to develop collaborations.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification /experience / training
  • Continuing education in related field required
  • Organizational skills to develop a project plan, monitor plans against established deadlines, and review and analyze results
  • Communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse audiences and facilitate bilingual interactions in English and Spanish
    Preferred Skills:
    • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in areas related to Community Development or Rural Studies, Agriculture or Agribusiness or Business Administration
    • Experience planning and executing workshops, meetings, and outreach activities
    • Familiarity with the challenges and opportunities faced by small-scale farmers and food businesses
    • Knowledge of agricultural practices, tools, and technologies appropriate for small-scale farming
    • Experience with digital communication tools such as websites, social media platforms, and content management system
      Special Conditions of Employment:
      • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
      • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested.
      • Overtime and occasional weekend work as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs may be requested.
